Hybrid Flooring in Melbourne

Hybrid flooring is the floor most Melbourne buyers end up choosing when they want one product that can run through the entire house — living areas, hallways, kitchen and laundry included.

It is built in layers: a rigid core, a printed timber or stone image, and a clear wear layer on top. The core is what makes it different. Because there is no wood fibre in it, the board does not swell when water sits on it, and it barely moves as the temperature changes.

Why Hybrid Suits Melbourne Homes

• It is genuinely waterproof. A spill left overnight is not a disaster, which is why it is the usual answer for kitchens and laundries.
• It handles our temperature swings. Melbourne moves from a dry heated winter to a humid summer, and a rigid core resists the expanding and shrinking that opens gaps in timber floors.
• It works over a concrete slab, which most newer Melbourne homes and apartments have.
• One floor throughout. No changing product at the kitchen door, which makes a home feel larger and avoids trims between rooms.

Thickness and Wear Layer — the Two Numbers That Matter

These are different measurements and buyers often mix them up.

Board thickness across our range runs from 5.5mm up to 12mm. Most floors sit between 6mm and 9.7mm, with 8mm, 6.5mm, 9mm and 7mm the most common.

• Thicker boards feel more solid, sound less hollow, and are more forgiving of a subfloor that is not perfectly flat.
• Thinner boards cost less and suit rentals, bedrooms and quick refreshes.
• Many hybrid boards have an acoustic backing already attached, which saves a separate underlay.

The wear layer is the clear protective skin on top, and it is what actually decides how long the floor keeps looking new. 41 of our hybrid floors list one — most are 0.5mm, with some at 0.55mm and a few at 0.7mm. If a floor does not show one, ask us and we will check it.

• 0.5mm — normal household use.
• 0.7mm — busier homes and light commercial spaces.

A thick board with a thin wear layer is not the hard-wearing floor it appears to be. Ask for both numbers on any floor you are comparing — we will give you them.

Herringbone and Pattern Options

Worth knowing before you commit: a herringbone floor costs more to lay than a straight one, because there are far more cuts and joins.

Hybrid, Laminate or Vinyl?

Dex sells all three, so here is the straight comparison:

• Hybrid — waterproof, rigid, hard-wearing. The only one of the three we would run through a kitchen, laundry and living area without changing product.
• Laminate — the cheapest, with a very convincing timber look, but its wood-based core makes it water-resistant rather than waterproof. Excellent in bedrooms and living rooms.
• Vinyl — softest and quietest underfoot and also waterproof, but its flexible core dents more easily under heavy furniture and shows an uneven subfloor.

Choosing a Colour

Tone changes a room more than any other choice. Light and grey-toned boards make a space feel larger and hide dust; mid browns are the most forgiving of everyday wear; dark floors look striking and show every footprint and paw mark.

Installation and Cost

Hybrid is a floating floor — the boards click together over the subfloor rather than being glued or nailed, so it goes down quickly and can often be walked on the same day.

What moves the final price is usually not the boards:

• Subfloor preparation. A slab that is out of level must be corrected first, or the floor will flex and the joints will separate.
• Underlay, where the board does not already have one attached.
• Removing the old floor, plus trims, beading and door adjustments.

Looking After a Hybrid Floor

• Sweep or vacuum on a hard-floor setting — grit is what dulls a floor, not walking on it.
• A damp mop is fine. Being waterproof does not mean you should flood it, and never use a steam mop.
• Felt pads under furniture legs; mats at external doors.
• Individual boards can be replaced if one is badly damaged, so keep any offcuts.
