Why European Oak is the default choice
European Oak has become the standard timber floor in Australian homes, and there are real reasons rather than fashion alone:
- It takes a finish beautifully. European Oak accepts stains, whitewashes, smoked and natural oil finishes better than most species, which is why it comes in so many tones.
- The grain has character without being busy. Tighter and more varied than American Oak, with knots and features in the more rustic grades.

At 220mm this is the widest board we stock. Wide boards make a room read larger and calmer because there are fewer joins across the floor.

190mm is the sweet spot for a lot of Melbourne homes — noticeably wide, without the price step of a 220mm board.
Arlo WildOak
A more characterful grading with visible knots and grain movement, for buyers who want the floor to have personality rather than uniformity.

How to choose: the three decisions that matter
1. Board width
Width changes how a room feels more than any other single choice. Wider boards mean fewer joins, which reads calmer and makes a space feel larger. Narrower boards suit smaller rooms and period homes. We stock from standard widths up to 220mm.
2. Wear layer thickness
This is the genuine timber on top, and it determines how many times the floor can be sanded back. A 4mm wear layer will take two or three full sands; a thinner one is designed to be re-coated rather than sanded. It is also the main driver of price, far more than brand is.
3. Tone and finish
Light and white-washed floors hide dust and make rooms feel bigger. Mid and warm browns are the most forgiving of everyday wear and pet traffic. Dark floors look striking and show every footprint — worth knowing before you commit, not after.
Take samples home. Oak changes character completely between morning light, afternoon light and artificial light, and a showroom’s lighting is not your lounge room’s lighting.
Installation over Melbourne subfloors
European Oak engineered boards can be floated over an acoustic underlay, direct-stuck to a slab, or secret-nailed over a timber subfloor. Which one is right depends on your subfloor rather than your preference — a flat slab and a suspended timber floor in an older home call for different methods. We check the subfloor before quoting, because flatness problems are far cheaper to find at the quote stage than after the boards are down.

Does European Oak suit underfloor heating?
Engineered European Oak works with in-slab and hydronic heating, which is one of its advantages over solid timber. The floor needs to be installed with the heating commissioned and the correct method for your subfloor, so tell us at quote stage if you have it.
